The Speed Art Museum was founded in 1927 by philanthropists Hattie Bishop Speed and Charles Phelps Speed as a memorial to their parents, Sidney and Hattie Bishop Speed. Initially conceived as a single room in their house devoted to the study of art and literature, the Speeds soon developed the museum’s permanent collection. Today, the museum stands as Louisville’s premier cultural institution, offering a collection of over 10,000 works of art, spanning the history of art from ancient Egyptian to contemporary masters. The Speed Art Museum is home to a significant collection of American, European, and Asian artwork, including Impressionist masterpieces and post-Impressionist modernists.
