Shively was officially incorporated in 1939, yet it has long been part of the Louisville area. Sarah Logan, an early settler, once called the area “the Plains of Shively” as early as 1790. This name eventually became the official name of the city. During the 20th century, the population of Shively increased at a rapid rate, from around 500 in 1940 to over 6,600 in 2000. This growth came from the demand for new housing for those moving to Louisville for employment opportunities. Over the years, Shively has become a thriving and diverse community. Shively is home to a number of cultural and entertainment venues, including its own theater, a variety of art galleries, and a range of restaurants and shopping centers. The city also provides residents with access to a number of local parks and walking trails. Twin Parks Community Center is a great destination for families and those seeking entertainment in the area. Featuring a pool, basketball court, and more, Twin Parks offers swimming lessons, youth programs, and activities for all ages. Shively is also home to several popular restaurants. Southside Café, Pic’s Pub, and Swingbelly’s are all popular spots for local eats and drinks.
