Kentucky’s 3rd Congressional District is located in the north-central portion of the Bluegrass State. The district includes the cities of Louisville, Lexington, and Frankfort and stretches across much of the northern, central, and eastern portions of the state. It is composed of 31 counties in all. This district is a highly competitive one, with Democrats and Republicans running for the seat on an equal footing in every election. The current representative, John Yarmuth, is a Democrat and serves as Chairman of the House Budget Committee.

The constituency of the 3rd Congressional District is heavily dependent on the health of the U.S. economy, as well as the state and local economies. The district is home to many major businesses, including the headquarters of Yum! Brands, the company that owns KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell, as well as Brown-Forman, the owner of Jack Daniel’s and Woodford Reserve. It’s also home to the University of Louisville, the University of Kentucky, Ashland Inc., and Lexmark International. In terms of the district’s political leanings, the 3rd Congressional District tends to lean Democratic. The district has been reliably Democratic in several recent presidential and congressional elections, typically voting for the Democratic presidential candidate by a margin of between five and fifteen points. The district also tends to elect Democratic representatives, although this could change in the future as the district’s demographics continue to shift.
